Rare Disease Day

Such diseases as the common cold or flu, even chicken pox have all been experienced by most people at one time or another in their life.

However there are some people who suffer from such a rare disease that there is a special day coming up to draw attention to this health issue.  Sunday February 28 is Rare Disease Day.  This day is designed to raise awareness of the need for more research and better access to diagnosis, treatment, and other services.  It is estimated that 25 to 30 million Americans are effected by a rare disease.  A rare disease is defined as affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans.

Those Americans who face a rare disease often experience long delays in finding a diagnosis and treatment for their disease.  Along the process they will have to undergo numerous medical procedures, which may not be covered by their insurance, which leaves the person facing financial obligations to cover the treatment cost.
